Put everything inside the comfortable reach

Storage that requires stretching, bending, or climbing fails its user twice: daily as friction, and eventually as risk. This user-specific method locates daily items, controls, towels, medicines, and outlets by the actual person's approach, posture, reach envelope, strength, and grip, so the room's contents live where its users comfortably are.

How to plan by reach

Measure the envelope, not the wall: for each user, standing and seated where relevant, the comfortable band between the lowest easy reach and the highest, with any grip or strength limits noted, one hand or two, pinch or grasp, lift or slide. Published accessibility guidance offers reach ranges for seated and standing use that anchor the bands where measurement is impractical.

Then zone the inventory into the envelope: daily-touch items in the heart of the band at their point of use; occasional items at the band's edges; rare and hazardous items deliberately outside it, with a safe access plan, and never on the improvised stool that unplanned storage eventually demands. The envelope is per-user; shared rooms zone for the most limited reach first.

The zones and their assignments

The daily zone earns the best storage: drawers that slide fully out rather than cabinets that swallow, shelving at the band's heart, one-motion access at the sink, shower, and toilet stations for the items each station uses. Drawer hardware matters here, full extension, easy glide, and pulls that weak or wet hands operate, loops and levers over knobs that demand pinch strength.

Controls and outlets are storage's siblings: switches, fan controls, and thermostatic settings pulled into the band; outlets for daily devices at counter-adjacent heights rather than baseboard stoops; and shower controls reachable from outside the spray and from any seat. Towels join the audit, within a wet arm's reach of tub and shower exits, at heights that work for the household's shortest and most limited reachers.

The edges get designed too: heavy items low but not floor-low, sparing backs and balance; medicines and hazards in controlled storage that children cannot reach but their intended users comfortably can, a two-condition test that default cabinets often fail; and lighting inside deep storage so finding is seeing, not archaeology. The result reads as ordinary good design, which is precisely the point.

Is reach planning only for limited-mobility households?

It is ergonomics for everyone: rooms zoned by reach have clear counters, findable items, and no improvised stools, which every household enjoys. Limited mobility raises the stakes; good design serves both audiences with the same moves.

What is the most common reach mistake?

Daily items stored high because the cabinet happened to be there: the medicine over the toilet, towels on the far hook, the fan switch behind the door. The fix is assignment by use, which costs thought rather than money, ideally while switches and cabinets are still movable.
